Are you using technology or integrating technology?

Having been guilty of everything on the left hand side… even with the most noble of motives, I think this chart by TeachBytes (posted in Med Karbach’s terrific blog “Educational Technology and Mobile Learning“) gives me – and hopefully others! – lots to think about. It is so easy to get caught up in the wonders of it all and throw pedagogy out of the window.  The digital generation have grown up with technology and are justifiably unimpressed by gratuitous technology that brings nothing to the learning objectives – or worse, makes them spend time learning some technological skill that prompts a nice burst of higher-level thinking and questions like: “How does this fit into the general scheme of things?” or: “What is my purpose in this class” or even: “What is the teacher’s purpose in this class?”  So, I suppose the chart will have to be propped on my desk to stop me playing with technology … to a bored, bemused audience of students!
